Most people have heard of the term “GMO” but very few know what the term stands for or what it means. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. By definition, it is “an organism whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there.” These genes could come from a variety of places including, bacteria, viruses, insects, animals and even humans.
In many cases, the seeds are being genetically engineered to increase resistance to herbicides, insecticides, pesticides and more. The leading producer of genetically modified organisms is Monsanto, who also happens to be the leading producer of the herbicide glyphosate (aka Roundup). By genetically engineering agricultural seeds, they become “Roundup Ready” a term coined by Monsanto meaning that farmer’s are able to spray as much herbicides and pesticides as they want without destroying their crops. Not only that, but some of the seeds have been genetically engineered to produce their own form of insecticides including Bt Toxin, a bacteria that produces proteins which kill insects from the inside out.
I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like something I want to be putting into my body. It’s even been proven that there are high amounts of glyphosate on the crops at the time of harvesting and yet these foods are being consumed by millions of Americans a day.
That’s why at Green Life Market we fill our store with as much Non GMO and USDA Certified Organic products as possible and only carry 100% Organic produce. We understand how important it is to fuel our bodies with the most nutrient dense foods and we always make ourselves available to guide and educate our customers.
