Kombucha has been around for years and yet only recently did it start becoming a hot trend in the health industry. But what is kombucha and why should you drink it?

What is Kombucha?

In simple terms, kombucha is fermented tea or sometimes referred to as “mushroom tea”. It is most commonly made using black tea and requires a SCOBY  (aka “the mother”) and sugar. SCOBY stands for Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast and that’s exactly what it is! It’s the home for good bacteria and yeast that ferments the tea. Have you’ve ever seen a bottle of kombucha and noticed the weird cloudy stuff floating around? That’s the SCOBY!

What are the health benefits?

Kombucha has a wide range of health benefits but it’s most commonly known for containing high amounts of probiotics. As you may already know, probiotics are great for gut health and after being nicknamed our “second brain” we have come to learn the importance of having a healthy gut. Probiotics (aka good bacteria) are great for helping aid in digestion, balancing your gut flora, boosting your immune system and more!

In addition to probiotics, kombucha is also recognized for it’s powerful antioxidants, digestive enzymes, beneficial acids and detoxifying properties.
